Standard tipping is 15–20% in the US. 15% for adequate service, 18% for good, 20%+ for excellent. For buffets, 10% is customary.
Technically, tip on the pre-tax amount. In practice, most people tip on the total including tax. The difference is small — about 1–2% on the tip.

Japan: no tipping. UK/Europe: 10–15% if not included. Canada: 15–20%. Australia: not expected but 10% appreciated. Always check local customs.
In the US, yes — 15% is the floor for acceptable service. Servers rely on tips as part of their wages (federal minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13/hr). Only tip below 15% for genuinely poor service.
For 10%: move the decimal left one place ($45 → $4.50). For 20%: double it ($9.00). For 15%: add half of 10% to 10% ($4.50 + $2.25 = $6.75).
It's not required but increasingly expected. 10% is generous for takeout. Counter-service restaurants typically don't expect tips, but tip jars are common.
$1–2 per drink is standard at a bar. For craft cocktails or table service, 15–20% of the tab. Open bar events: tip the bartender $1–2 per round.
